Actor Richard Gere believes Trump has ‘almost destroyed the country’ in just six months
Hollywood veteran Richard Gere has strongly criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump, saying he believes Trump has “almost destroyed the country” within just six months of his second term.
Speaking to Europa Press during a charity dinner in Spain for Open Arms, a non-governmental organization that conducts sea rescue missions, Gere expressed concern about the political climate in the United States.
“Six months, he’s almost destroyed our country,” Gere said. “We have a president who’s completely — he’s not only crazy, he’s a dark, dark presence. And it’s happened so quickly.”
The actor also commented on Israeli politics, calling for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to step down. “This is not someone who can change. He has to go, and all the enablers in the coalition with him have to go,” Gere stated.
In recent months, Gere has been vocal about the Israel–Hamas conflict. He participated in Artists4Ceasefire, a coalition of entertainers urging President Joe Biden to call for a ceasefire and ensure humanitarian aid reaches Palestinians, while also demanding the return of hostages to Israel.
During a benefit concert in the U.K. earlier this year, Gere argued that Trump could play a decisive role in halting the conflict. “Netanyahu needs the U.S., needs Trump so badly. One day, if he wants a Nobel Peace Prize, this is how to get it,” he remarked.
Gere, who recently relocated to Spain with his wife and their two young sons, also addressed Trump’s leadership while accepting a lifetime achievement award at Spain’s Goya Awards. He described the U.S. as being in a “very dark place,” adding:
“We have to be vigilant, alert, brave, and courageous. There’s a place in all of our lives for basic kindness, love, and understanding.”
At 76, Gere says he looks forward to beginning a new chapter “living in another culture” with his family in Spain, even as he continues to speak out on global political issues.
